What’s the difference between a palapa or tiki hut?
The main difference is geography.
The Temperature Difference

The biggest difference is: what a palapa will do for your backyard, poolside, garden etc. These structures are proven to transform any area into a "cool" place to relax and a great place for friends or family to gather. The temperatures and attitudes will improve by 10, 15, 20 degrees. It will be fun to be outside again.

At Texas Palapas we build a four post palapa that can be customized to fit most any needs. Also we build a two post palapa that works with bar tops and built-ins, also easily customized. Palapa umbrellas are also available, 8 ft. in diameter to (our biggest to date) 16 ft. All these products can be installed by us or there might be an affiliate in your area. Kits can also be shipped for the accomplished handyman.

What sets us apart from others? One reason is our design, these designs utilizing a mast or principal to connect the rafters with horizontal braces. This creates a unique look a useful as well as attractive ceiling. To complete the structure posts are sawn in half to show the graining on the slats to attach the leaves.
The Ash Juniper Difference

The most distinctive difference is the wood. The timbers we use are Ash Juniper. It’s a common tree in central Texas but kind of exclusive to this region. Called cedar or juniper cedar by us locals, it’s considered a nuisance.

This wood is so tough it’s still being used for fence post because of it's resistance to rot, bugs, and the elements. But with some effort it becomes a unique and beautiful building material. These posts are stripped of its bark, power washed and trimmed for use. We apply water proofing and most of the structure is treated with UV protection as well, to extend the natural beauty.

From a National Home Builder's Association

"There will be a definite trend toward outdoor living. An increasing number of high-end homes will come with outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, pools & spas, and outdoor home entertainment equipment."
*Also worth noting I do not believe anything built today is anymore “Green Conscious” than these structures. With the exception of deck screws and a few of dollars of electricity, they are predominantly hand built and utilize materials that are incredibly renewable.

*Although rare some other materials are used periodically to enhance structural stability.
